Operation "All I really want for Christmas"

Sunday morning. Did you know that today is Veteran's Day? The eleventh day of the eleventh month traditionally marks the day that we honor and celebrate those who have served our country, regardless of how we might feel about the military actions they might have been part of.

This is my first Veteran's Day as a military spouse (and a military spouse of a service member stationed abroad, at that) and I really want to make sure that I both honor the holiday and support my husband at the same time.

You see, he's not doing so well right now, is my TCB. The days at sea are longer than he remembered and he misses home - me and the kids - very much. He's actually created an online ticker to keep track of how long he's got before he comes home for good. Don't get me wrong - he loves the people he's working with, loves his work duties, and is generally optimistic about his chances at promotion before he retires, but it's really not easy to be so far away. Whatever you imagine, double it and you'll be close to the emptiness and ache we both feel. Anyway...I think I might have hit upon a way to do two good things at the same time.

Would you like to support a lonely sailor at the holidays? All that's required is $0.42 postage, a holiday card, and the willingness to put pen to paper. When I asked TCB what he wanted for Christmas this year, he told me that he really doesn't want (and can't store) anything but that he's really looking forward to getting cards and letters from friends and family next month. Of course I'll send him a card as will his mom, sister, nephews, and my mom, but wouldn't it be nice if he got a bunch of cards and letters from people he'd never even met? And if those cards told him how much the sender appreciated his 17-1/2 years of service to the United States Navy, so much the better! (FYI, he's a decorated veteran of Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq and has served on submarines, surface ships, and in support of the Marines at Camp Pendleton.)

I'm calling it Operation "All I really want for Christmas" and, if you'd like to participate, please email me for his mailing address. This may seem selfish to some - supporting just my husband instead of the tens of thousands of soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan - but I have to trust that they have families who are doing the same thing for them and my focus is on the one servicemember that I know for certain needs my (and your!) support right now: TCB.

Please consider participating: it will cost you next to nothing and will bring so much happiness to my husband. You never know, it might just brighten your holiday, too.

Count me in, Denise. I will totally do that. It's one of those things I've been meaning to do, but haven't, and even if I don't *know* your hub, I *know* you, in that virtual way... :)

This means you get to be one of a select few who know the real me, also. ;)

Count me in -- you know, we could probably send extra stuff to his crew who may not have anyone writing them. It's just a thought -- if we keep TCB happy and his crew happy....
